Organic! My
psychedelic funky
organ trio Organic! spent a week just before Thanksgiving 2005 tracking
some new music at Benny's Wash & Dry. Guitarist and co-leader
John
Cabán and I subsequently “massaged” the tracks and,
adding only minimal overdubs, molded them into new sound sculptures.
Several of the long improvisations naturally flow from idea to idea,
resulting in a connected suite of musical ideas, thus inspiring the
name of the CD: Sweets. The recording captures the spirit of our live
performances. This is our first release with our new drummer, Israeli
sensation Yuval Lion. |

I love playing with bassist Gregory Ryan and Drummer Keith Hall. These guys have re-ignited my passion for playing jazz with an acoustic piano trio. Our debut CD Skyline features original music by all three of us as well as arrangements of some favorite standards. These boys swing hard, but we also cover significantly more ground, incorporating R&B, funk and Latin grooves into our music. Sonic wizard and guitarist John Cabán and I co-lead this funky-rock instrumental trio in which I play Hammond organ, synth-bass and a cornucopia of vintage keyboards. Organic! plays live improvised compositions. Each performance features spontaneous new music that is fresh but rooted in the tradition of 70’s instrumental funk and R&B. The music is accessible- fun and funky. Together we speak an intuitive harmonic and melodic dialogue. Deep, greasy grooves provoke eclectic tempo shifts and sudden dynamic changes. Gregory Ryan and I have a love for modern Afro-Cuban and Afro-Latin jazz. Grupo Yanqui is the band we founded to play our original music that’s influences start with these styles and extend into Brazilian, funk and R&B and elsewhere. Our fiery debut CD, released in 2001, features an international lineup including Cubans Yosvany Terry on saxophone and Dafnis Prieto on percussion, Israeli percussionist Gilad and Americans, saxophonist Chris Cheek and drummer Rob Garcia. We have added trumpeter Alex Norris to our lineup lately and negotiations are underway to record our second CD. Grupo Yanqui will tour internationally as part of the 2006 Jazz at Lincoln Center / US State Department's prestigious American Music Abroad program.
